Frequently Asked Questions

Bird netting is essential in gardening and agriculture, providing a physical barrier to protect crops, plants, and fruit trees from bird damage.

It's key uses include:

  • Protecting produce: Primarily used to protect soft fruits and berries, allowing them to ripen fully and maximise your yield.
  • Safeguarding vegetables: Prevents birds from destroying young seedlings and leafy greens.
  • Commercial horticulture: Protects large rows of fruit trees and vegetables, reducing stock and economic loss.
  • Covering ponds: Protects ponds from predatory birds such as herons.
  • Structural uses: Can be used to bird-proof buildings to prevent roosting, nesting, and the subsequent mess!

Properly installed bird netting is essential for protecting crops and plants without harming birds. First, you’ll need the correct materials:

  • Net mesh size: A smaller mesh is for small bird species, while a larger mesh is used for the likes of pigeons. It’s crucial to consider excluding specific pests without inadvertently harming beneficial insects.
  • Support: The bird netting should not touch the plants. Use hoops or frames for beds, or posts or wires to support larger areas.

How to fit bird netting

  1. Prepare the area
    • Cut the bird netting to size, allowing extra for securing.
    • Install posts (1-1.5m apart) or assemble hoops. Ensure the frame is taller than the mature plant species to support growth and airflow.
    • Remove or cover sharp points that could tear the netting.
  2. Lay and secure the netting
    • Gently drape the netting over the support structure (this is easier with two or more people!).
    • Pull tight across the frame to ensure even coverage across all plants.
    • Secure the bird netting to the ground to prevent birds from crawling beneath it. Use pegs, stakes, weights (bricks, rocks), or bury the bottom edge.
    • Join netting pieces and seal corners using cable ties or clips, ensuring no gaps remain.
    • Create a sealable flap or gap for harvesting, watering, and weeding.
  3. Final check and maintenance
    • Inspect the entire perimeter for any holes larger than a golf ball that could trap birds.
    • Ensure the bird netting has enough tension to prevent sagging.
    • Periodically check for and repair tears caused by weather or animals to maintain plant protection and prevent wildlife from becoming trapped and injured.
